While I was doing (very little) after Christmas shopping at Century City mall, I came across Madewell. I’d never heard of the store before, but it looked inviting and fresh. And of course, after my Mom said Veronica Webb always talks about the brand via Twitter, I had to traipse on in.

And let me tell you. I was not disappointed…

The store has a great American sportswear vibe with a tinge of British sensibility. It’s the perfect place to get functional basics like v-neck tees, jeans, and blazers, with all the pieces being REALLY made well, but without the Gap-like or J. Crew-like prices. Speaking of J. Crew, after doing a little research, Beth Moore of the LA Times states Madewell is a “family-owned work wear label founded in Massachusetts in 1937 and resurrected by the J.Crew Group in 2006,” and dubbed “J. Crew’s edgier little sister.” I would agree.

Madewell would fall under the category of a mid-priced retailer. Jeans were on sale for $60! Basic quality tees for $19.50, and bracelets for $15. The necklace I found to the right retailing for $128 is superchic and edgy with half chain links/half clustered jewels; something you don’t see everywhere, and I simply fell in love. Their claim to fame seems to be their “denim bar,” with a variety of jeans to choose from.  Overall, customer service was great, vibe was smooth, and I would definitely go back and do a little damage to update my quality basics like a white tee.  Don’t you hate when it’s time to throw out your  favorite white tee due to severe underarm stains?

If you like Anthropologie mixed with Gap, this is your store. But honestly,  there is something for everybody. So go on the website, find the store in your area, and get to shopping if you so please.

Pros: Veronica Webb shops there, good prices on basics, quality merchandise, great customer service

Cons: The best jewelry and shoes are a tad pricey, tight retail space
